Retired Sgt. Joe W. Tanner, age 86 of Hampton, passed away Sunday, May 14, 2017 at Vitas Hospice in Stockbridge.

Joe was born October 29, 1930, in Gainesville, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Zeb Vance Tanner, Sr. and his only son, Darrell Tanner and his wife Debbie also of Hampton. Joe was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Lake City Baptist Church. Joe moved to Hampton in 1954. He worked for the Department of Public Safety for 7 years. Joe went with the Department...

Retired Sgt. Joe W. Tanner, age 86 of Hampton, passed away Sunday, May 14, 2017 at Vitas Hospice in Stockbridge.

Joe was born October 29, 1930, in Gainesville, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Zeb Vance Tanner, Sr. and his only son, Darrell Tanner and his wife Debbie also of Hampton. Joe was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Lake City Baptist Church. Joe moved to Hampton in 1954. He worked for the Department of Public Safety for 7 years. Joe went with the Department of Transportation in the enforcement as a Supervisor working in several counties in this area. He was in charge of maintenance of the weight stations until his retirement in 1995. Joe was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Shriner and member of the Scottish Rite.

Survivors include 1 brother; 2 sisters; 1 granddaughter and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Haisten McCullough Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Masonic Section of Fairview Memorial Gardens in Stockbridge. Friends may visit the family Wednesday, May 17, 2017 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607 in memory of Joe.
